Isotope ratio MS has shown that whale sharks, the world’s largest fish, roam less than previously thought. This greater understanding of their habits is important for their conservation.
Isotope ratio MS
Unique “graffiti” on the walls of a cave in central China describes the effects drought had on the local population over the past 500 years. Stable isotope and elemental analysis of stalactites have been able to confirm the climate variations.
The use of isotope ratio mass spectrometry is on the rise, with more papers published and more labs with the facilities. The authors describe the main IRMS studies conducted on seeds and isotopes and outline the most important aspects of the use of seeds to study plant eco-geochemistry and plant material traceability.
Elemental and isotope analysis of the metals in ancient artefacts such as the prutah shown here sometimes can pinpoint the places where the metal was mined. This can be combined with historical sources to determine when the coin was likely struck. Archaeologists can use the evidence to identify or narrow date ranges of historical significance.
