The 2017 Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award has been made to Edward I. Solomon.

New research by scientists at the University of Bristol has challenged one of the key beliefs in chemistry: that proteins are dependent on water to survive and function. The team’s findings could eventually lead to the development of new industrial enzymes.

High-throughput circular dichroism measurement system which automates CD and UV/vis absorbance measurements for large numbers of samples. A third detector option allows simultaneous fluorescence measurement. The flow system coupled with an ASU-800 autosampler provides precise micro sampling and eliminates complications often associated with automated CD measurements.

JASCO have announced the stand-alone Model FVS-6000 VCD spectrometer as well an add-on Model VFT-4000 VCD accessory for the Jasco 4000 and 6000 line of FT-IR spectrometers. Features of the new systems include: digital signal processing to enhance sensitivity, thermally stabilised modulator system to eliminate baseline drift, extra large dewar to allow up to 15 hours of operation without refill, innovative auto-alignment system to eliminate linear anisotropy artifacts rather than correcting for them, high intensity ceramic light source for maximum energy and lifetime up to ten years, and an optional accessory for auto-sampling. Both systems are capable of measuring conventional IR absorption along with vibrational CD and are controlled from the same Spectra Manager II spectroscopy software suite.

Professor Bonnie Ann Wallace of Birkbeck College, University of London, UK, has received the 2009 Royal Society of Chemistry Interdisciplinary Prize and the 2010 AstraZeneca Award from the Biochemical Society for her work on Development of Methods and Applications for Circular Dichroism and Synchrotron Radiation Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy. She has also recently co-edited (with Dr Robert William Janes of Queen Mary, University of London) a book published by IOS Press on Modern Techniques for Circular Dichroism and Synchrotron Radiation Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy.

Knowledge of the absolute configuration of asymmetric, chiral carbon atoms is essential for the understanding of enzyme mechanisms, drug action and structure–function relations, as well as for the determination of biological structure. For example, the right-handed alpha helix in proteins and DNA (both right-handed B and left-handed Z) are all based on the knowledge of the absolute configuration of their building blocks, amino acids and nucleic acids, respectively. Knowledge of the absolute configuration is crucial in the discovery, development and the registration of drugs.

The P-2000 from Jasco is a customisable polarimeter having a single optical platform with the option to provide the most suitable combination of optical elements: polarisers, lamps and detectors. The instrument can also be field upgraded at any time. A range of sources, including Tungsten–Halogen, Sodium and Mercury lamps, is available. Up to two light sources can be installed simultaneously, which gives the P-2000 a wavelength range from 254 nm to 880 nm. It can be operated from a PC or from the iRM hand-held controller. An automated validation program is available for GLP/cGMP laboratories or those regulated by the FDA.Jasco Europe srlIssue: 19/03 RSN:
